Nathan Cullen – Perpetuating the Tanker Ban Lie

Telling the truth is obviously not on the table as Nathan Cullen in a desperation act continues to lie about his Tanker Ban. Polls already show that the public including British Columbia now favour a pipeline, he continues to perpetuate the lie.

Nathan Cullen Lies: The province of British Columbia has long had a position from when James and I and Marco as well were all in parliament together. BC’s position from referendums and Kitimat to First Nations who have been very consistent on the northwest coast saying this is not appropriate given the risks that are presented to us in our economies and our environment with diluted bitumen. So that seems low.

The Truth is: 31 of the 40 First Nations communities signed on as owners of the Northern Gateway pipeline and were set to get $2 billion in benefits from the project over 30 years.

Nathan Cullen Lies: Coastal First Nations just recently, a few weeks ago, sent a letter to all involved saying that they do not have that support.

The Truth is: Marilyn Slett, president of Coastal First Nations – Great Bear Initiative is an environmentalist group, that would like to think they own the 200 mile limit off the west coast of Canada. Fact is they only have applied to own land on the West Coast, these are far from settled land claims, but Nathan and the NDP have plans to remove non aboriginal ownership of land in BC.

Nathan Cullen Lies: So I think that’s what’s frustrating the Premier in British Columbia is that we’re taking up a lot of time over a 50-year long negotiation and a controversial project. Meanwhile, we have tens of billions of dollars in projects going into northwestern BC in particular but BC more generally that do have support of First Nations, do have support of the jurisdiction of BC and benefit Alberta in lots of ways. And so Alberta is exporting record amounts of oil today.

The Truth is:  Eby and the NDP hold a minority control over British Columbia, the initial Northern Gateway project passed all environmental reviews, but with a political stroke of the Liberal/NDP pen, it was cancelled.

Nathan Cullen Lies: Like they’re doing pretty well. We already bought them a pipeline to the west coast that cost a lot of money. And it seems like it’s putting a lot of things at risk including relationships with this fantasy of a provincially backed pipeline project with no proponents willing to put any cash on the table.

The Truth is:  David Eby is facing desperate days ahead as the BC Greens are about to default on their commitment to keep the BC NDP in power.

Nathan Cullen is such a deceitful commentator, he is apolitical snake in the grass.

  • US Oil Tanker Traffic along BC’s coast
200-230 Oil tankers this yr will transport crude oil from the Valdez Marine Terminal, Alaska – south thru Cdn waters south of Haida Gwaii and continue along BC’s Inside Passage or outer coastal waters to the Juan de Fuca Strait at the Canada-U.S. border.
    **
Note: The Exon Valdez (single hull) 1989 spill precipitated major changes – there are no single hull tankers on the coast – all oil tankers are double hauled (an inner & outer hull separated by 2–5m) to contain spills if the outer hull ruptures. Vessel Traffic Services now in key areas like the Inside Passage and Strait of Georgia, that require tankers to report positions, speeds & routes in real-time with mandatory pilots for foreign-flagged vessels over 350 gross tons. Plus mandatory training, lower work hours and tankers must slow to 11 knots in sensitive areas, use traffic separation schemes (lanes like highways), and undergo pre-arrival notifications 96 hours in advance. And yes, while spills are possible there haven’t been any since ’89.
