Shopping Carts – Time to fine stores that allow shopping cart theft.

Letter to the Editor

To the editor, a long time ago you allowed the public to post rants about things that really are annoying and should not be occurring in a civilized society, so here goes my rant.

I am sure everyone at one time or another has seen people in Smithers take shopping carts off store property, and leave them abandoned all over the place, and being used to cart stolen items by criminals living in local tent cities.  I won’t hide the fact I am from Smithers and I am really sick of local residents footing the bill for stolen shopping carts.

The three primary offenders are BV Wholesale, Jerry’s No Frills and Safeway.
Enough is Enough

I know, you are about to tell me that is not possible, but it is. The cost of stolen, damaged shopping carts, as well as retrieval costs is added to the price of goods you and I are paying for. We see the homeless pushing carts full of goods likely that were stolen, and we have been subjugated to standing by and shaking our heads, because our elected officials refuse to do what they were elected to do. For citizens to take control of these stollen carts would mean we would get arrested for doing the right thing.

Its time Smithers town counsel took the lead and write into law a fine to stores that refuse to charge people for taking carts off their property.

Its simple, post signs in your stores that say carts removed from the stores property will be treated as stolen property. Or should we all start boycotting stores who refuse to act on this problem?

This theft needs to end, time to get with the program Smithers or step down and let others do the job of protecting the public.
