Smithers residents targeted for $700,000 NDP drug addiction experiment.

Let’s start off with exposing the truth, the term “homeless” is a cover-up for a much more serious “drug addiction problem”, it does not matter if they are in compound full of tents, or in the old Fabrications building, or in the Taj Mahal, it will never fix the underlying problem. Planting them in the heart of Smithers and you punish the innocent for what those addicts are doing in unconscionable. Homeless is a consequence not a solution. Homeless is not the cause of drug addiction, and alcohol is just an add on addiction, its primarily a drug addiction problem created by NDP policies. Almost 100% of these addicts have homes, and had to leave due to their addiction, they all have loving caring families in neighbouring communities that refused to be subjected to their addiction, so the NDP is pawning that problem off on the local residents of Smithers.

They are not “HOMELESS” they are “DRUG ADDICTS” with a few alcoholics tossed in.

However a few NDP cronies will make a very lucrative living and personally profit from this addiction problem. Stop calling them homeless and call it for what it is, a drug encampment, where addicts are free to roam and cause havoc on the residents of Smithers. Feeding them, assisting them, is not a case of “treating everyone with compassion” its a case of feeding the problem, with the public suffering the consequences of addiction without ever breaking the addiction problem.

The NDP safe supply is just another failed experiment where the drugs are sold to our students, so addicts can buy the more powerful lethal drugs. This is how we destroy our children’s futures, by feeding them safe supply drugs. The mantra “homeless” is a socialist cover-up for inducing crime into communities, we are being scammed with the word “homeless, they are NOT homeless, they are addicts.”

BC NDP created yet another pork barrel for its supporters and we as tax payers will be forced to pay for it.  The newly formed NDP “Bulkley Valley Harm Reduction Society”  was created but no mention of how much money will pour into the pockets of the new “program manager” Billie Kennedy.  No credentials for Billie Kennedy were mentioned, no previous job experience mentioned, no mention of any of its members having any related experience in running this centre. We cannot fund our medical hospitals and Eby keeps breaking out more ways to bankrupt British Columbia.

WHAT is going one here?

Or is this just another Interior News fail for failing to ask those questions.

No breakdown of how much each of the people working in this centre will be paid. No mention about food allowances and or other perks, all in the name of non profit. This is tax dollars, cut the crap about it being non profit, if you earn money from it, then its a scam to call it non profit.  The Smithers town counsil appears to be 100% complicit with this new tax funded stunt. Worse is zero information on who Billie Kennedy is, what her credentials are, what education she has, and what she will get paid. There is no way they got that building (Fabrications) without the approval of the NDP alliance with the Smithers Town Counsil.  We do know the following from Interior News.

Kennedy said the group of people who have formed the society care about meeting people where they are, treating everyone with compassion, and building safety and belonging into the fabric of the community so no one falls through the gaps. They officially incorporated last year. “We’re a local non-profit made up of people who live and work here in the Bulkley Valley. Many of us have been doing outreach, harm reduction, and community care for years,” she explained.

Guests will have access to warm sleeping spaces, hot meals, and washrooms, and a place to connect with supportive staff. There will be at least two trained staff members onsite, 24 hours a day.

“Kenny said this Kenny said that, no public input, just a tax funded program dropped out of the sky by the same woke alliance of the BC NDP and Smithers Town Council, came up with yet another plan, and a media licking it up like a kitten after milk. The Interior News acted like paid promotion agents, keeping facts compartmentalized to insure nobody upsets the leftist agenda. One might even think it was a coordinated effort between mainstream press and the same woke alliance  of the NDP and Smithers Town Council. No wonder goverment needs to fund Black Media, because they lost most of their public support who turned to social media for the truth.  The Smithers Interior News failed its duty to demand the details, was this intentional or planned?” They have $700,000 dollars to spend and the residents of Smithers have seen nothing, what kind of reporting does Interior News do?

In a nutshell the NDP in conjunction with Smithers Town Council invented a new organization, that funds lucrative jobs for NDP supporters, left unsaid are the facts about how much the members will get paid to run this experiment. We are supposed to trust them on the details, sorry were not buying that. If public funds are involved we have a right to a detailed report on where the funds will go. Better yet close the program and use it to fund our underfunded medical system. We do not need more benefit packages for NDP supporters, it time to get vote buying out of our system.

It should be run the way the New-To-You is run, 100% volunteers, nothing goes into the pockets of the people working, its all volunteer to make Smithers a better community and not a wage replacement scam.

We are sick of these NDP scams where they load thier own pockets at the experience of taxpayers. Its time to come clean on what is going on here.

MLA Sharon Hartwell condemns NDP’s reckless “experimental shelter” in Smithers

November 10, 2025

SMITHERS, B.C.: Bulkley Valley–Stikine MLA Sharon Hartwell is calling on Housing Minister Christine Boyle and BC Housing to immediately halt construction of what she calls an “experimental shelter” being forced on the people of Smithers without consultation, safety planning, or accountability.

“This so-called shelter is not a solution. It is a reckless social experiment being imposed on a northern community that has already been stretched to the limit,” said Hartwell. “Families, doctors, and small business owners were blindsided by a $700,000 decision made in Victoria without consultation or care for local impacts. People are angry and they have every reason to be.”

The shelter, funded through BC Housing, is being installed near homes and medical offices without community input. The site will also include a tent that will support the provision of so called “safe supply” drugs for users of the shelter.

In a letter to government, local physicians described it as “deeply irresponsible and poorly planned,” warning it poses serious risks to patient safety, community security, and access to care. They wrote that the shelter was approved “without transparency, without consultation, and without any plan to mitigate the consequences.”

“This project is an experiment that puts residents, patients, and vulnerable people at risk,” said Hartwell. “Doctors, first responders, and residents are raising red flags, and the NDP government’s response has been silence. That is not leadership, it is negligence.”

Hartwell said the government’s priorities are backwards, noting that while the NDP found $700,000 for this experimental shelter, it has failed to fund essential health care and emergency services elsewhere in the North, including the Kitwanga ambulance station.

“People here are watching ambulance stations close, hospitals struggle, and paramedics work overtime. The government’s answer is to bankroll a chaotic and untested shelter project that will do nothing to address the need for treatment,” said Hartwell. “This is what happens when decisions are made by bureaucrats in Victoria who never have to live with the consequences.”

Hartwell called for an immediate pause and full review of the shelter project, including it’s approval process, lack of consultation, and oversight from BC Housing and the Ministry of Housing.

“The people of Smithers deserve real solutions, not reckless experiments. The NDP’s ‘experimental shelter’ is the latest example of a government that governs by ideology and arrogance, not by listening to communities,” Hartwell said. “If Minister Boyle will not act, she will have to explain to northern families why she is funding dangerous experiments instead of essential services. What we need is real investment in treatment, and mental health professionals, not another place to enable people to stay in this cycle of harm.”
