Smithers Town Council – Tent City – Deceitful Funding

Stealing a quote from George Orwell, “During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.”  To me deceit and an outright lie come close to being one and the same thing. Before we go on I want to share a video from the town counsel meeting, September 9, 2025 Note that these are items passed at a “closed” meeting. What follows was about another subject the Tourist Information Center, so we cut the video there.

Its so unfortunate that the Interior News has become the cheerleaders for socialist ideals, and no longer are there to serve the public in any other capacity, they hardly keep up with the real news stories regarding what is happening in our community. Just like CBC they have become the voice of oppressive left wing politics. They could have reported the other side of this story but chose to endorse the left wing town counsel instead. They have become the mouthpiece for socialist ideals.

Quote from the Town of Smithers press release.

At the Regular Meeting of Council held on September 9, 2025, Council awarded a contract for security coverage at the Temporary Overnight Sheltering Area (TOSA) and periodic roving patrols of the downtown core and strategic community locations. Security personnel will be patrol from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. weekdays and 24 hours on weekends and statutory holidays beginning in October 2025. The enhanced security presence will provide consistent monitoring, deter disruptive behaviour, and support the safety and well-being of TOSA residents and the community.

This security initiative will be fully funded through Resource Benefits Alliance funding and will not impact local property taxes. While this added support is an important step in fostering safety and order at TOSA, the Town recognizes that this is not a long-term solution. The Town of Smithers continues to advocate to all levels of government for stronger systems of care, more accessible health and social supports, additional housing, and safer living conditions for all community members.

To say it will not affect local property tax is at best twisted truth and lies blended for public consumption.

If you spend all incoming revenue on political frills, no wonder citizens will pay for all infrastructure upgrades.  All of that 350 Thousand dollars could have been spent on aging infrastructure as opposed to putting that on the shoulders of local residents. The truth is it will effect the tax rates of future required expenditures and its the residents of Smithers that will have to fork over funding to pay for money wasted on left wing ideals.

Its a sad waste to blow 350 Thousand Dollars when the community of Smithers has so many more pressing expenditures in the area of aging infrastructure that needs replacement.

Put criminals behind bars, no more bail for repeat offenders, put drug addicts in rehab centres, and shut down tent city, its no longer temporary, its a socialist way of life.

QUOTE “This historic agreement—unanimously endorsed by all 21 RBA local governments—will create well-paying jobs, fund urgently needed infrastructure, and help build resilient, sustainable communities across Northwest BC. The first wave of funding reached the RBA local governments in 2024, marking a long-overdue reinvestment of the wealth generated by the Northwest’s resources back into the region.”

Meanwhile expect home owners to fund aging infrastructure, on top of out of control spending by governments.

I could tell you a lot more about Ken and Lisa, but in an age were speaking the truth, could land you in court, I will have to leave it at that. Note that this was in 2021 it is now 2025

Then in 2022 we had this video on Facebook.

So Smithers instead of investing it in community infrastructure, or creating well paying jobs, Smithers town counsel invests it in tent city improvements. Has anyone other than myself notice  the infamous quote “Temporary Homeless Camp” it now has a new official name “Temporary Overnight Sheltering Area (TOSA) and unofficially it has become a “Permanent Homeless Camp” costing tax payers over 350 Thousand a year. It’s long overdue to be removed, temporary ended a long time ago, it was cr4eated as a temporary solution in 2021. To suggest the NDP created this money is a fallacy, its money that was taken by way of taxes, that money belongs to taxpayers and the NDP owed us those funds, we created those revenues, its only proper and just to return some to the people of the north. It a staggering insult to have the NDP pretend that its an NDP gift to those living in the north.

“What we need in Smithers is simple, get rid of the revolving door crime policy and introduce jail not bail.”
Quit catering to criminals by locking them up, instead you hire babysitters as your solution.”

Taxpayers have already been whipped out of all their income via tax increases, so no they won’t add relief, or additional spending costs to your burden.
